TELANGANA prison department to host Sports & Cultural Fest for detainees

Hyderabad: There is a strong need to encourage sports and cultural activities among prisoners to promote physical fitness, teamwork, discipline and mental well -being, said Dr. Soumy Mishra, general director of prisons and correctional services, here on Wednesday. She announced that the 6th meeting of the sport and cultural prisoners will take place in the second week of April.

As part of the preparations, the sports equipment worth `4,37,522 were distributed to the nodal officers of all the prisons. The meeting will see prisoners from all the prisons in Telangana who compete in four plutoons of 55 volleyball members, Kabaddi, Badminton, Carromi, Chess and Athletics.

Dr Mishra emphasized the role of sport and cultural activities in reducing psychological stress and encouraging a positive mentality among prisoners. She mentioned that such initiatives provide prisoners with a constructive outlet for their energy, helping and reintegrating into society, said in a press release.

In addition to empowering the prisoners, the department also gives priority to the welfare of the prison staff. As part of this initiative, the sports equipment worth `4,81,080 have been distributed to the staff of Tlangana to help them maintain physical fitness, reduce stress and increase general well -being. Dr. Mishra congratulated the dedication of officers, coordinators and staff involved in achieving the initiative.
