Holiday business owners and residents in a famous resort on the coast say it is destroyed by “moronic” antisocial behavior – and by drug smells. Weymouth from Dorset is famous for its sandy beaches, which attracts two million days of trips a year, bringing millions of holiday money annually.

But some locals and BNB owners and hotels say that there are increasing reports about fights, drug use and drug offers. People who live and work in the city say that problems have affected the holiday experiences – customers say they will not return. They believe that authorities need to do more to address the constant smell of marijuana smoking and problems with antisocial behavior.

Lee Waugh, 57, a military veteran who has lived in Weymouth since adolescence, believes that problems are coming out of hand.

He said, “It certainly aggravated. The levels of problems seem to be higher.

“For example, we need front tables to present our clothes and bring people to the store, but the opportunists are stolen. It is a capture 22. It is a problem in the city – groups can cause.

“They have to issue more orders to keep them outside the city and actually apply them. I noticed that in winter it does not seem so bad, but in the summer, I expect fully that it will return.

“There are a lot of weeds – you can smell it. People don’t even hide it in the city, they go up and on the street with it.

“It is the mentality of the package with groups, only yobs that are just young – my pair was beaten and had to go to the hospital.

“The city also shows, it is an disadvantaged area and there is a lot of poverty, and if it begins to appear in the city and, with the antisocial behavior in it, it can be an unpleasant place.

“If you happen to be one of the people who are caught, you will probably not return again.

“But under austerity, they closed everything, all the youth centers and the progress made in the 90s stopped. The young people have nowhere to stay.

“I think we could do with a few more officers in the rhythm, even if they are only community support officers.

“I am a way and I used to invade cities in the 80s, but there is nothing like what young people do today.”

Janet and David Dye, 67 and 71, are from Basildon, Essex, but frequently visits his son living in the city.

David – a retired manual worker – believes that it is not correct for families visiting the area.

He said, “If you drink a bottle of beer on the street, the police should stop you and tell you to advise it – that should be the law.

“But they will often not do, until someone complains that he is drunk. But the weed is the main problem, and the authorities should not let everyone do it.

Janet, who worked in the hospitality sector, said: “They do not have community officers who are supposed to be here going up and down? We come here for 13 years and have never seen.

David said, “They should have people to monitor him, walk up and down, and, if I catch them, give him a warning and take things, and if they are caught again, they should be prosecuted.

“This is everywhere. And that’s why they smoke weeds, they have nothing else to do, so that they cause a problem.

“If they want to play with knives, you stick to the army. This will teach their discipline and teach them respect, because most do not.

“People get more money from benefits than a job, they return and say” it is not worth going to work, we get more money on benefits. “

“We should send them out and tell them to increase this promenade, choose the garbage, then at the end of the week, when they signed something to say they did it, they can get their benefit. Work for it.

Janet added: “But the government doesn’t believe it?

“There are no community groups or programs or something for children who are over 12, 11 or 12 years old. There is nothing for older children.”

Barry Coleman, 69, owns the Baan 57 -year -old store.

He says that although business is going well, they suffered significantly from shopping and antisocial behavior.

He said: “It has improved since McDonald’s closure. We must be constantly shopping, however, we have rooms and there is a problem with young people who steal jewelry.

“We call this weed alley. Every time someone goes by, there is a big hand.

“Many visitors have been given up here, but these are streets throughout the country. I must say that the council keeps the seaside, but the fact that drug traffickers and street drinkers will have an effect on holiday producers.

“The problem is only changed around the city, rather than solved. But the problem of councils in these coastal areas is that they tend to have empty BNBs and hotels in winter, so that they send a lot of homeless people in these places.

“So these coastal areas can become less popular. But there is a problem with homeless throughout the country.

“Several stores have radios connected to each other and the Community police, to deal with violent people or to raise stores and this should not be necessary.

Danny Luong, 54 years old, is working in Weymouth at Baan 57. He is originally from Vietnam, but has lived in the area for several years and believes that the police do not do enough once they catch the problem producers.

He said, “I saw these Moroni fighting on the street.

“The community police do a good job, but I catch the Morons, dispersed them, but do nothing, do not follow the judges, so they return.

“According to the Police and Crime Commissioner, last year, the crime went down here – it was not, it has been – but now you have to complete so many forms, it is 12 pages.

Kate Matthews, 56, has lived in 11 -year -old Weymouth and owns the Pimplemed store in October 2024.

She said: “There are certainly several cases of large groups that are on the seafront, which are drunk and noisy.

“The biggest problem in Weymouth is adolescents. Especially around the station, this is a major, major problem, but fortunately, they don’t tend to come here.

“We have a WhatsApp group for the street, so we can announce each other and we can look at CCTV and check. Sometimes there are the people you least expect – as a young couple in the 20s.

“I had a few moments when I recommended people to stop whatever they are thinking of doing.

“There is something about the railway stations that attract drug users – maybe because it is lit all night. And it seems to be young, and when there are 20 of them, it can be intimidating.

“It certainly got worse – from blocking I believe. No doubt for me, it is a Covid Thing, people lost their manners. Even something as simple to hold a door. But I think it will improve, it must.

“I like the old – school approach of the police officers at the rhythm. We need more at the weekend, when it is more crowded.

“They have to have no money, but they have enough to buy drugs and have all the clothes they want to wear, but so far they leave my business alone.”

Roger Hart, from Lyndale Guest House, said because the Guests Dorset Echo complain after two fights outside last week and promised “do not return”.

Another said he saw drugs behind his hotel and were vandalized regularly.

A hotel said that the sale was “terrible” and that “drinkers in shelters” causes a problem, and antisocial behavior is a “daily appearance”.

But another said that last summer was better than previous years.

The chief assistant of Constanta Mark Callaghan told Dorset Echo: “Dorset remains a safe place to live and visit.

“Our collective efforts have registered a reduction in antisocial behavior reported by six percent last year, compared to the previous year and a huge 40 % of 2021, due to a series of operations and partnership initiatives.

” Anyone who continues to be aware will be taken into account for additional actions, such as community protection notices and criminal behavior. ”
