Family members have accused after dies of 18 years of starvation, being linked to bedtime days, the police say

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (KCG/Gray News) – three people are who face the accusations in the death of an 18 -year -old family member in Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids police said the situation comes from an investigation of November 9, 2024, when the officers were called to a residence on Roemig Street for a person’s death report.

The officers found a corpse, later identified as Ezekiel Baseme, 18 years old, in one of the rooms.

According to a search warrant, Baseme lived in the house with his family.

Family members told the officers that the 18-year-old was schizophrenic and had an episode a few days before.

According to the family, he did not eat and did not sleep because of the episode and had begun to act aggressively towards them. So, two of his brothers tied him to a mattress and kept him on him.

However, when family members checked it later, they said Baseme was rigid, cold and pulse.

Cedar Rapids police said they were called at home, but not until one day after the family established that Baseme was dead.

Investigators told Baseme’s family told them they kept him because they were scared that they could kill one of the neighbors, after threatening or trying to attack and kill someone in the family.

Family members said that when they tried to feed or give them water, Baseme will continue to fight.

Prior to this incident, the Baseme family members said he asked them to shoot him and kill him, claiming that he heard voices.

On March 28, investigators updated the investigation, announcing the arrest of three of the Baseme brothers: Christian Baseme, 29 years old, Pierre Baseme, 26 years old and Azane Baseme, 23 years old.

Each one is experiencing accusations that include involuntary murder, assault that cause bodily injury and false prison.

The state medical examiner has established that Ezekiel Baseme has died as a result of probable starvation and dehydration in a physical restraint.
