The co-founder of Zerodha, Nithin Kamath, warned of the growing threat of digital arrest scams, revealing that the victims lost over 2,000 lei compared to such fraud in 2024. In a recent response in Lok Sabha, the State Minister for Internal Affairs, Sanjay Kumar said the National Office of Crime Registry (NCRB) does not maintain specific data on digital arrest scams. However, the government has set up the Indian Cyber ​​(I4C) crime coordination center, which blocked more than 3,962 Skype IDs and 83,668 WhatsApp accounts related to such fraud.

The deception usually starts with a phone call from someone posing as a police officer, claiming that a package on the name of the recipient has been confiscated to contain illegal articles like drugs. The victim is then constrained in a WhatsApp video call with a scam dressed as a police official, who threatens the arrest and asks for money for “solving the case”.

Kamath warned against the reaction in a hurry to such calls. “Those of us who are educated could assume that no one would fall for such obvious scams, but they were doubled by Indians,” he wrote. He advised people to stay calm, seek a legal law or to visit a local police station instead of engaging with unknown appellants. “At least, consult someone knowing, your lawyer or simply go to the nearest police station,” he added. “Also, block or ignore the calls and messages from unknown numbers.”
