A french dj satire that does not do much of the party

With the French star Vincent Cassel in a somewhat rare comic role, Banner explores the French electronic scene through a DJ struggle trapped in an international criminal ring … and a French information officer hires one of them to reduce the gang. But does this look out of the wall at the French club scene does it carry the weight of its expectations?

Bertrand de langeron, also known as some, is a main element in the stage of the French club known worldwide, which exploded in the late 90s under the name of “French touch” with such top-tops as Daft Punk or Cassius. As a long-time graphic designer for Ed Banger Records, the long-term house of other famous French acts, such as Justice or Breakbot, Langeron has seen the right side of madness and ego trips. And now he has the opportunity to turn him into an original Netflix movie, the first time behind the camera from a script that he co-inscribed. The land is quite simple: Scorpex (Vincent Cassel), an aged DJ that remains a unique miracle from a single that has made 15 years ago, is snatched from Rose (Laura Felpin), a French information officer who intends to reduce an international criminal ring related to Star DJ Vestax (Mister V)). Her crazy idea: use Scorpex as an asset to infiltrate your Vestax surroundings and identify the head of the ring, whose physical appearance has been changed through plastic surgery. What is in it for Scorpex? Apart from losing his plush apartment in Paris due to tax evasion, a return to glory in the shadows of Vestax and the promise of another “Banger” to return clubs from all over the world. He really calls the operation in which he participates … “Banger”.

From the opening sequence, you can say that the director wants to make a satirical comedy in the vein in This is the spine tap No model form. Vincent Cassel gives a rapid spirit and natural intensity to play a self-absorbed DJ, prone to show everyone that he still has “he” to balance his desires, especially his daughter (played by Nina Zem), who is an aspirant DJ. Unfortunately, once he is snatched by a demanding, somewhat contemptible anti -grace crew to be a mole in his enemy’s entourage BANGER They are struggling to make a cohesive movie. It signals that it is not taken too seriously, but, like some current French comedies, it can be seen more like a ski buffet that sends aspects of the French DJ scene, rather than a delusional and unwavering journey, promised by land.

BANGER Sure has a lot of quality elements to work with, including who is who is from the French stand-up scene, including Paul Mirabel and Panayotis Pascot. But, as the film becomes even ridiculous, the jokes are wearing thin, including jokes about penis sizes and a drug bender that goes too much and is directly in a movie from the late 1990s. Banger does not seem to know what story he wants to say, even if it is based on two comedy mechanisms that are a lighted story for The reflectors and an infiltration story that presents an ignored character, who is far over the head. The frenemia relationship between Scorpex and Vestax does not work long enough, as Mister V is struggling to make her character “Golden Boy” as ridiculous as Cassel, stretching the thin presence. As a bald associate, nicknamed Molotov, Alexis Manenti almost steals his sequences by pampering manic ideas and veiled threats, including a bit that he is dead to test Scorpex.

The film seems to find its foot when it tells us about the necessary headaches to make a song “Banger” in the studio, when you have forced elements as a singer who was imposed by the head of the crime organization. Unfortunately, the sequences seem to overcome their income and wear quite thin as they play. All this is based in a fairly forgotten end, which tries to amplify the ridiculousness and physical comedy without winning it. Especially, BANGER It seems to overlook its main “professionals” for this type of project: the scale game offered by a Netflix project, where even the club scenes seem to be in a hurry, with an “entrance” for the Vestax character. And especially: music, which is offered by Belgian legends 2Memydjs. Their pulsating score is mostly used in the background or to send EDM beats to drive the characters crazy … Another missed opportunity.

Banner’s distribution: Mister V as Vestax, Vincent Cassel as Scorpex and Laura Felpin as Rose.

BANGER It seems to play as a private joke among friends who want to make each other laugh: some associates appear in several points in the movie, including the head of ED Banner Records Pedro Winter and director Romain Gavras. But it remains quite unused and a movie with diminished returns: while Vincent Cassel can have a comedy chops and has only one line, the writing leaves it down. However, the film has a lot of calls, given the explained comedian talent, including the appearances of French stars Manu Payet, Paul Mirabel and Nicolas Maury.

Laura Felpin

Even though the role of Rose, which is apparently the only one in the French intelligence services that truly have an impulse on the club culture, finally bears thin, Laura Felpin breathes a lot of energy and presence in it. Her frustrations with the unusual character of Scorpex are one of the reliable comedic mechanisms of Banner and, even if the result is unequal, offers a good showcase for the future Felpin star. Her growth on the French stand-up stage was completed by the appearances in the French+ French hit Bref.2as well as in an ensemble of the second season of the CANCIC+ Comic franchise They were flutteringA Bachelor-To the similar parody based on an American comedy Burning love.

While Scorpex hates DJs that pre-programmed their sets, BANGER It feels as predictable and unequal as a demo of a song posted as a final version.
