The cabinet greets the reduction of crime level

Thursday, Feb 27 2025

While the crime levels in South Africa remain unacceptably high, the cabinet has greeted the decrease of categories of crime statistics in the country.

“While the general levels of the crimes continue to remain unacceptably high, the decline shows that interventions by the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) to make South Africa make a difference,” said the office in a statement on Thursday.

In his statement following his meeting on Wednesday, Cabinet said that “the crime fight is a common responsibility between the police, the community and the business sector.”

As Minister of Police, Senso Mchunu presented the quarterly statistics on Friday for the third quarter of the current financial year (October 1, 2024 – December 31, 2024).

Statistics have shown that there was a decrease in several categories of crime, including a notable decrease in carjacking and robberies.

The third quarter showed a 9.8% decrease in crime, a 3.3% reduction in rape and a 3.2% decrease in sexual crime attempts

At that time, the minister said that, although there was a reduction in several categories, more must be done to reduce the level of crime of the country.

“We position ourselves according to the police, while we continue our work throughout the country,” said Mchunu.
