The toxicologist in Harris County fired for a notification of “inadequate” for more than 1,200 defendants

Houston – A toxicologist of Harris County was fired after the authorities say that there were accusations of untruth and dishonesty.

The judicial records indicate Cassandra Cavazos-Johnson, 36 years old, was dismissed from the Institute of Legal Sciences of Harris county in January for “accusations supported by untruth, lack of candor and/or dishonesty”, related to a request for renewal.

Last Friday, the prosecutor of the Harris District notified the defendants in 47 pendent cases and 1,169 thrown cases and their lawyers that their criminal cases could have been associated with Johnson’s toxicology activity and could have legal options.

The DA Bureau says that the calendar of cases that can be affected is from 2019 to January 2025. I also say that her work would have been tested mainly for drugs, DWI and the cause of death in cases of homicide.

KPRC 2 obtained a copy of a letter sent to an unknown defendant in a DWI case dating from 2021. The letter was obtained by the judicial documents in Harris county.

The letter states that the DA Bureau is legally and ethically forbidden to provide the defendant any advice on potential legal options, but instruct the person to contact their lawyer if he has questions about the letter or want to discuss any options in their legal case.

The DA Bureau told KPRC 2 that the analyst could have performed a kind of test or managed a proof associated with the case, which does not mean that the case will be rejected, because the case could have been accompanied by other evidence, videos, confession or more. In case of waiting, the DA office said it would be something for the Defense Lawyer.

The Institute of Criminal Science Harris launched this statement regarding the dismissal of Cavazos-Johnson:
