Accidental drug overdoses for Orange County decreased from 2023 to 2024

The office of the medical examiner of the ninth district today launched the data that shows that the deaths by opioid overdose have declined in Orange County from 2023 to 2024.

“Accidental drug overdoses for Orange County decreased by 30% from 2023 by 2024, while opioid drug overdoses decreased by 37.1% over the same period of time,” said Dr. Joshua Stephany, chief exammer for the medical examiner of the ninth district.

It seems that the county works with residents who do not usually access care, including people incarcerated in the prison in Orange County.

“We identify people at risk for a recidivism of opioids or people who face an opioid withdrawal,” said Dr. Thomas Hall, the manager of the Orange County Office for a drug -free community and the administrator of the Opioid settlement funds.

Hall continues, “the treatment clinic assisted by medicines for health services (MAT) in the corrections in Orange county makes a difference in the lives of detainees who are looking for a treatment with substance disorders. We work with those who start the MAT treatment and follow their care in the community when they are released.”

The health services in Orange County say that the people registered in the matte program of the county and the navigator services are less likely to die due to an overdose within one year from their release from the prison in Orange county.
